How do you relax?

Being the world’s idlest person, relaxing is not a problem for me. I am always ready to eat, drink, read, and watch cooking shows instead of whatever productive tasks beckons. I can ignore a beckon like nobody’s business. The only time I get really keyed up is when I’m on deadline. Then I find long walks and Xanax help.

Gah! Such a hard question. OK, Pride and Prejudice.

Judging the space occupied on my bookshelves, Dorothy Dunnett, Georgette Heyer and Loretta Chase are in a dead heat.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

Oscar Wilde because he was devastatingly witty and also, by all accounts, a genuinely kind and vulnerable man. Also Shakespeare because I have so many questions.

What is the most interesting trip you have ever taken?

A tour of English stately homes that has given me a ton of inspiration for my books.

What was your most embarrassing moment?

Tell us about your book(s)!

I wrote Regency romances for Kensington Zebra for several years. I was so sad to see the sub-genre die, with the closing of Berkley Signet and Kensington Zebra traditional Regency romance lines. I’ve always felt that there was still a market for that kind of novel, one where the relationship was the centre of the plot. I moved on to paranormal and historical romance, and then began writing cozy mysteries as Victoria Hamilton.

But one day I learned that my literary agent, in association with a fabulous editor, Bill Harris, was e-publishing books for her clients using a cooperative imprint called Beyond the Page. Having already regained the rights to my Regency novels, and having the rights to some of my other work, we entered into a mutually beneficial venture.

We’ve rebranded them as Classic Regency Romances, and I’ve been so touched by how many people appreciate the traditional feel of these romance novels. It’s a whole new audience, and I’m just tickled pink. Along the way I’m giving some of them ‘facelifts’ to reflect my (hopefully) better writing skills.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

That’s a tough one, but I can see Rufus Sewell as the hero of almost any romance I’ve written! Or Colin Firth. For a female lead I have to say Michelle Dockery, Lady Mary on Downton Abbey, would work as the female lead in a Regency romance… she’s so elegant and pale.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I refuse to believe in writer’s block. There have been times when writing has been difficult, but that was generally because I was going in the wrong direction.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

Believe the first, ignore the second. LOL. Actually, I have skin like a rhino, developed over the years. Good reviews are easy, and I’m always pleased when someone likes my work, but bad reviews I approach with a few thoughts in the back of my mind.

First, is it really a review or just a nasty so-and-so venting on a poor, unsuspecting author?

Second, is the review written by someone who can string a sentence together? If the reviewer is functionally illiterate, it’s hard to take it seriously. Yes, I read for punctuation, grammar and spelling in reviews. Shouldn’t everybody?

Third, can I take anything valuable from the bad review? A well written negative review can be a fabulous learning tool. I’ve been a professional author for many years now, but there will always be something more to learn.

And last… I will always always remember that a review is someone’s opinion; they’re entitled to it, but it doesn’t mean they’re right, nor that I need to take it to heart. To remind myself of this, I occasionally read the Amazon reviews of some of my favorite books and authors, but it’s not schadenfreude, and I don’t enjoy the negative reviews they get. It’s just that I figure if reviewers can criticize Diane Setterfield, Scott Westerfeld, and Sue Grafton, then I am in excellent company.

How do you relax?

TV. I love reading, but after a day of writing and/or editing sometimes I just need a mindless reality TV show like Survivor, or Big Brother. Or a great sitcom like The Big Bang Theory. Or… be still my beating heart… Downton Abbey.

What is your favorite motivational phrase?

Go big or go home? Nothing ventured, nothing gained? I really don’t have one.

What is your favorite book?

Just one??? Has any writer ever been able to answer that? If I had to choose the one book I have read over and over, it would be Pride & Prejudice, the most perfect novel in the English language.


If you weren't an Author, what would be your career of choice?

Librarian… all those lovely, lovely books!

What is your favorite movie?

Again, I have a few, but I’ll keep it to two.

Old comedy: Some Like It Hot… Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon dressed up as jazz musicians Josephine and Daphne. ‘Nuff said.

Romantic: The Holiday, with Kate Winslet, Rufus Sewell, and the incomparable Eli Wallach. This is what I tell everyone about The Holiday; it poses as a romance between Jack Black and Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz and Jude Law, but the real heartfelt romance, the very best part of the movie, is between Kate Winslet and Eli Wallach. That’s the relationship that makes me cry, the aim of any good romance movie.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

Jane Austen. I keep trying to think of someone else, but she’s it. I’d like to talk writing with her for an afternoon, while we sipped tea in the garden.

What is the most interesting trip you have ever taken?

London, England when I was 14. I was too young to fully appreciate it, but I don’t travel much, otherwise. It was amazing.

What was your most embarrassing moment?

 Only one? Well… this is a contender. I was walking to work one spring morning. Ahead of me on the sidewalk I saw a guy whacking at a bird with a hammer and I bolted up to him, shrieking about how could he do that, what a jerk he was, etc. He looked up at me with wide eyes and told me the bird had been hit by a car, and it was suffering; he had to put it out of its pain. I felt like such an idiot, because as much as that could have been an excuse, I knew in my heart he was telling the truth and doing the right thing. I felt like an idiot, but the important thing is, I learned not to judge someone’s actions on an impulse.

Sleep in or get up early?  Early. Some mornings very early. Even if I’ve been out until two or three am, I’ll still be up by seven or eight, at the latest.

Those characters intermix in my new Brotherhood of the Falcon Series, wherein the spy organization hinted at in the Rougemont Series is explored. Think Jason Bourne meets Downton Abbey.
 
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

Philip Cavendish, the hero of Rougemont #3, I imagine as Henry Cavill. My street team says Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow star) is Wilhelm Montegue from Song for Sophia, and we all agree Joe Mangianello is Andrew Tilmore in The King of Threadneedle Street. Wiping drool…
 
Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Sigh. No. I’m a boom-and-bust writer. When inspired I write almost 24/7, but when I’m not, I watch reruns on Netflix. I’m jealous of the daily-word-count authors. Wish I could be like that — blame it on the “artistic temperament.”
 
What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

All the wise authors I know say to stay away, don’t read the reviews. Me, I can’t help it. I read every single one. The good ones make my day, and it’s gratifying to hear that a reader understands what I was trying to do with the story. 

There’s a saying, something like, “Don’t tickle the dragon if you can’t handle the fire,” and writing unusual stories does attract some passionately rotten reviews. If my story simply isn’t a reader’s cup of tea, fair enough. But sometimes an astute reader finds the chinks in my armor and really lets me have it. I try to learn from the truths in the bad reviews and improve my writing. I won’t lie — sometimes I wipe a tear and eat a chocolate bar first. 

How do you relax?

Kickboxing, believe it or not. Sometimes one just needs to punch imaginary bad guys for an hour. Very cathartic. Don’t be too impressed — sometimes I turn my phone off and take a nap instead, because doing nothing is everything it’s cracked up to be!
 
What is your favorite book?

Bronte’s Jane Eyre, if I had to pick only one. Also love Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo and Forster’s A Room With A View. 

Modern favorites are Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Lisa Kleypas’ Travis series, Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, and a lovely little biography about a Nobel Peace Prize-winning physicist called Reflections of a Scientist by Henry B. Eyring. 
 
Who is your favorite author?

I want to be like Meredith Duran when I grow up, and Laura Kinsale is the queen of epic, intelligent historical romance. Eloisa James, Loretta Chase, and Lisa Kleypas are favorites too. I adore Susan Elizabeth Philips and Linda Howard when I read contemporary romance. 
 
What is your favorite movie?

Do you remember back in the 90s, a quirky little flick starring Val Kilmer and Elizabeth Shue called The Saint? A stone-cold mercenary (Kilmer) with a talent for grifting steals the formula for cold fusion from a nerdy but endearing scientist (Shue). Love the unlikely romance.

My top 5 favorite period pieces are An Ideal Husband, Four Feathers, Daniel Deronda, the Fassbender version of Jane Eyre, and Gaskell’s North & South. 

What was your most embarrassing moment?

Groan. Hands down, the time I rode down a steep hill on my bike, carrying a tote full of music books on my way to piano lessons… 12 years old, and of course I’m wearing a skirt, and I do a spectacular wipeout the very moment Kyle (the neighborhood heartthrob) drives by with his dad.  They pull over and scrape me off the pavement, then I sit bleeding all over the passenger seat while Kyle’s dad makes him ride my purple bike home. I know Kyle saw my white cotton undies.

Tell us about your book(s)!

I have read Regency romances since I was a teenager, and as I approach the big 3-0, that adds up to a lot of romances.  I found myself re-writing stories in my head and wishing for a little more action.  So I wrote my own story.  And that story turned into another story, which turned into another unexpected story which has turned into yet another unexpected story.  And that's what I hope to give my readers.  I want to give them the unexpected.  Reading is all about escape, and escape is harder when you see what's coming.  I like to give my readers all the love and romance and excitement that a romance entails, but I like to give them just a little bit more to keep them guessing.  In Son of a Duke, the first in the Spy Series, I wanted to tell a classic love story in a not so classic way.  There is love and murder and espionage and international intrigue.  But as a twist, I made the heroine a maid.  Maids get to fall in love, too, right?   
 
Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

This is the best question because I actually "cast" my characters in my head.  And believe it or not, I always pictured the heroine of Son of a Duke as Mary Poppins.  I know this is a terrible visualization when your casting the heroine of a romance novel.  But that's just what popped into my head!
 
Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I get my iPod, put on some really awesome headphones, and dance like a mad woman around my living room.  My Basset hound usually thinks I've lost it, but after about 10 minutes or so, I'm right back in the chair typing away.  Some really loud Pat Benatar is usually enough to get the creative juices flowing again.
 
What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

I love reading my reviews.  I know a lot of writers say they never read them, but I honestly find some of them to be fascinating.  I have this vision of my book in my head, and there are always things that I like and don't like about it.  And I'll read a review and see the reader had a completely different experience, and it reminds me that a written piece is alive with perspective.  It's just beautiful, whether the review was good or bad. 

How do you relax?

After a really long day, I'll drag my lazy hound onto the couch with me and my hubby to watch amazing shows on the Travel or History channels.  I just like to let myself get lost in the rich stories and amazing places and think about how I can fit it all into a story.

What is the most interesting trip you have ever taken?

In college, I studied abroad in p, and it allowed me to backpack through Europe on spring break.  While I visited places like Amsterdam and Rome and Paris, it wasn't so much the places that I went but what I learned about myself on that trip.  I feel like that trip was a defining moment between me as a child and me as an adult.  And when I think about it now, I can't believe my mom let a 21 year old woman travel through Europe with nothing more than a backpack!



What was your most embarrassing moment?

I was interviewing for my very first "real" job, and I was going through a lightning round of interviews with various people.  I was on my last person, and she asked that age old question of what do you want to know about the company.  At this point, I had run out of the standard questions to ask, so I resorted to "How do you feel about the management here?"  I had no idea who this woman was in the company as no one had explained her position to me, so I was just hoping it was a good question.

On my first day there, I found out she was the CEO.

I write Regency set romances and sweet contemporary romances. My stories usually involve a cast of characters, with family being a large part of the mix. I try to include a bit of humor as well.

The fourth book in my Regency series The Clearbrooks is called THE MISCHIEVOUS BRIDE. Milli, the mischievous  younger sister in a previous book, finally has her own story. This novel has been a long time coming and should be published by the end of this year.

Here’s a peek at THE MISCHIEVOUS BRIDE! 

Heiress Miss Millicent Shelby has been in love with Lord Marcus Clearbrook for years, ever since her sister married his brother four years earlier. But being much younger than the handsome lord, she devises a mischievous plan to marry the stubborn man. However, everything turns upside down when a wicked fortune hunter enters the scene, and unless Marcus takes drastic measures, Milli will fall into the enemy's hands...

Though my fans don’t know it yet, I am hoping to write Book 5 of The Clearbrooks. That story will include the duke and his young bride.

I have also written a contemporary romance series called the Colorado Clearbrooks. The characters are based on the descendants of my Regency series.

Future novels may include spinoffs from the Clearbrook family. They would be both historical and contemporary. We’ll see what happens!

Each of my two stand-alone Historicals can lead to a series as well, but I have to admit, I have too many ideas and not enough time to write! But one never knows...

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

For the hero, maybe someone like Ryan Reynolds or Jake Gyllenhaal.  Maybe Jennifer Lawrence for the heroine. But I’m sure my readers have their own ideas!

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

Just write. At least try to put words on paper each day. You can always edit. Some days will be better than others...

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

Reviews are subjective. I do read some reviews, and yes, sometimes, nasty comments hurt. Everyone can have an opinion, whether they liked the book or not. But the good reviews make my day.

I write my stories, hoping readers will enjoy a few minutes away from the hectic world. The love, the conflicts, and the growth of my hero and heroine are important elements in my novels, along with the commitment to marriage. If I can put a smile on your face or make you feel good for a little while, I have done my job!

I love to read and know what it means to find a comforting place to sink your mind for a few minutes of the day. It truly brightens my day to hear that I was able to give someone that experience! My next book, THE EARL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE, is the fourth book in my Muses of Mayfair series.  The series features a group of friends who all have secret artistic passions - the first book starred an actress, the second featured a writer, and the third was about a painter.  This book’s heroine may be my favorite, though - Miss Prudence Etchingham has a secret penchant for history.  When the book opens, she has decided to use her knowledge to forge antiquities.  It’s not a great life, but it’s better than making hats or becoming a governess.  But this puts her on a collision course with Alex, the Earl of Salford - the man she’s pined after for ages, and the only collector in London who can see through her schemes.

Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

I would love to cast Emily Blunt as Prudence, although Prudence probably wishes she were more like Keira Knightley.  For Alex, I’m going to have to go with Ryan Reynolds - he has the right mix of hotness and general good-guy nature.

Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

I’ve slowly started to come around to the idea that writer’s block usually isn’t writer’s block.  For me, if I can’t make progress or feel stuck, it’s almost always because a scene or plot arc isn’t working and I’m not yet willing to admit that I have to rework it.  Once I sit down and really think through what the problem is, I can usually start writing again.  Also, switching writing mediums (going from laptop to pen/paper, or from Scrivener to Google Docs) helps, for some reason.

The other 10% of the time, I’m burned out. In that case, I recommend a strict diet of red wine, steak, chocolate, and whatever leaps out from the TBR pile.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?

I don’t read my reviews (cue hysterical laughter).  Seriously, I read almost all of them, even though I know I shouldn’t.  The good ones are so lovely that they outweigh the pain of the bad ones, and I really appreciate the time that readers take to recommend books to each other.  I find almost all of the books I read through recommendations from trusted sources, and reading reviews plays into that - so I think they’re a really important part of the whole reading/writing/publishing ecosystem.

Or, put it another way - sometimes a meal is great, and sometimes it makes you feel a little ill, but you’ve still gotta eat even if you get something bad once in awhile.  I’d rather get honest reviews that are occasionally painful than not get any reviews at all.  And I really treasure the nice reviews where the reviewer clearly got my voice.

How do you relax?

My commute is ninety minutes each way, so I spend a lot of time staring out the window and listening to music.  I also love going out for brunch or dinner with friends.  Other than that, I’m pretty bad at relaxing, so I’m more likely to take short breaks throughout the day to make tea or catch up on the Duchess of Cambridge’s latest outfits than I am to do something for several hours.

What is your favorite motivational phrase?

It’s a tie between “The wisest men follow their own direction” by Euripides (yes, I’m a dork) or “Your life is now” by John Mellencamp.  Not sure that either of them thought of themselves as motivational speakers, but I’ll take it.

What is your favorite book?

This is impossible!  I’ll give you three: Sunshine by Robin McKinley (a great vampire non-love-story that should have had the success of Twilight but wasn’t YA enough to hit a massive audience); The Masqueraders by Georgette Heyer (great romp/dialogue/double love story); and Romancing Mr. Bridgerton by Julia Quinn, which made me want to be a romance novelist.

Who is your favorite author?

For setting/description, I really adore Robin McKinley, even though she doesn’t write romance.  I’ve also been reading anything and everything that Kresley Cole writes - her worldbuilding is to die for.

What is your favorite movie?

I don’t watch a lot of movies, thanks to an ill-fated trip to the movies a few years ago in which I convinced fifteen people to see King Arthur with me (the Clive Owen/Keira Knightley vehicle that has a 31% on Rotten Tomatoes).  No one goes to see movies with me anymore, thanks to that. But I adore Zoolander, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy (with special tip to The Two Towers), and Love Actually.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

I would love to meet Eleanor of Aquitaine - I can’t even imagine how crazy/cool/crazy she must have been to pull off marrying a French king, going on a Crusade, leaving the French king for an English king, fostering the concept of courtly love, and having a bunch of sons who all tried to murder their father and each other.

What is the most interesting trip you have ever taken?

I lived in Hyderabad, India, for six months when I was working for a tech company in 2005.  I spent a lot of time in the office, but it was amazing to live someplace where such an ancient culture is in constant collision with the modern world.

What was your most embarrassing moment?

There are multitudes, since I’m a klutz. But the worst was sophomore year in high school, when I slipped as I was getting off of the school bus, bounced down the steps, and landed in my derriere in a mud puddle. When I called home to ask for new clothes, my father (bless his heart) didn’t understand the severity of a sixteen-year-old’s shame, so I spent an hour dripping during band practice while I waited for him to show up.

The first book, Seven Minutes in Devon, will debut later this fall.
